Cancellation of the Girls Travel Tryouts and the "Why?"

Greetings families.

We are canceling our Girls Travel Tryouts for U12, U14, and U16/18 teams for the 2020-21 season, but not the teams.

the "Why?"

In October, we decided to open registrations to rejuvenate our girls program, which would bring that new and refreshing energy to both Newton Youth Hockey and Newton Girls Hockey. I have been on the Board of Newton Youth Hockey for 3 years in the Learn to Play Hockey and VP of Intramurals roles. I noticed that the participation gap of genders is closing quickly and significantly.  We introduced new programs, formed new partnerships, and hosted to-be-annual events to continue to generate and strengthen interest in hockey for girls - all girls at all ages with all skill levels.

As we continued to discuss the future structure of the girls program and open registration for the above 3 travel programs, we found out from surrounding towns that some programs' U14 teams will either cease to exist for a couple of years or struggle with their "numbers" if we open our girls programs. We also found out how many girls of these girls are from Newton. Our decision to open registration for U12, U14, and U16/18 was made in the Fall for the purpose of generating interest in hockey for all girls and offer a competitive program for girls to play in the MYCGL.

That purpose and our mission has not changed, and our dedication to current and future female hockey players has grown stronger. We've had a lot of fun this year hosting events and talking with families. The feedback from coaches and families adds to our enthusiasm on a daily basis. Registration for the Girls Travel program will remain open, and we welcome all girls from all towns; however, should we notice a large trend in registrations from 1 or 2 or more towns, we will partner with that town to collectively create an enjoyable, sustainable girls programs in each town and grow the game. (Players will also need to, per Mass Hockey, get a signed waiver from their town. Not our rules.) Invitations to events we may host will be sent to towns' youth hockey association presidents. If a town reaches out to offer up an opportunity, like Cambridge earlier in the year, I will pass that off to our community. I am also exploring opportunities once or twice a year to host friendly scrimmages with club teams.

I cannot speak for other organizations, but I can speak on behalf of our Board members to let you know we are looking to collaborate with town and club organizations as part of our new energy and mission. If any family feels pressured by our coaches or Board members to keep your daughter with Newton or come back to Newton for any reason OR if a representative of NYH discourages collaboration with town programs, please let me know. Paul La Scola (VP Travel, Coaching Director), Chris Payton (NYH President), and I, your Girls Program Director, will be happy to address this concern or answer questions.

We ask that you complete the registration process so we can proceed with the tryouts sooner than later, in the event the girls interested reaches or exceeds 21.

While I write this lengthy note to you to inform you about our girls program, I also write this note as a hockey mom of a hockey daughter. I just see her as a kid who loves playing hockey (with a lot of sweaty headbands to wash).

Tryout Registration Fees For NYH/NGH Programs
There have been many questions regarding our new Girls U12 and Girls U14 teams. We see that many other programs clearly note that tryout registration fees of up to $625+ are non-refundable. We would like to clarify that if a team (at any level/program) is not able to be formed, we will refund your tryout fee $150.00. We do not utilize tryouts as a fundraiser. This refund does not apply to player withdrawals.

When you register, you will see a table that states, in red, a column that reads "Due Date", underneath "Now" and "$150.00". The rest of the table provides information for the payment plan, should you choose that path to payment. If you register without payment (tryout fee at minimum), the system automatically removes your registration within ~1 week. As we structure all of our tryouts, we cannot allow for walk-ins, which is also due to liability issues.

Regarding the girls program specifically, we realize this is the first time in a few years we have offered a Girls U12 and Girls U14 so please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any and every question you have. I appreciate all inquiries, and I am trying to get to all of them as soon as I can. I hope this note is helpful to you all.

Thank you,

NYH Tryouts Volunteers

Thanks to all who have signed up and provided their time to the cause.  It is greatly appreciated by our community.  We have done a great job filling in the slots, but we could still use more help at the sign in desk for the Mites on Tuesday February 25th.  And we need help at the sign in desk and on ice help for the Squirts for all three sessions.  Please look at your calendar, and see if you can give some time to help the tryout process be an exciting and successful endeavor.  You can find the signup link below or on our home page.

Players Evaluation

NYH Travel Members,

In the coming weeks coaches will be receiving from me a coach’s evaluation form and will be rating each player on their team.

In further effort to increase transparency with the player roster placements, we’re sharing the evaluation criteria that the coaches use to score the players. The intent is that one head coach and at least one assistant coach completes the form for each player.

Each item is scored 1 thru 10 with 10 being the best. A score of 10 shows mastery of all criteria. A score of 5 would indicate ability to execute all skills adequately. A score of 1 would indicate insufficient skill for the level.

Goalies have different Items and are scored the same way.

You are welcome to share this information with your player as the coach’s evaluation process will begin soon.

As a reminder, the intent is that the 2+ coaches ratings carry about 60% of the scoring weight, and the tryout evaluators’ (four or more evaluators over three tryout sessions) scores worth about 40%. Since the coaches are with the players 4-5 months prior to their evaluations, their score carries a bit more weight.

It would be nice if this was a simple math exercise, but it isn’t. Some kids are new to NYH and don’t have a coach’s scoring history to count for 60%. Some kids miss tryouts for a variety of reasons. In these cases, we seek additional input where we can.

I hope this helps with your understanding of the process. Let me know if you have questions. Thanks, and Happy Holidays!
