The Board of Directors of Newton Youth Hockey has approved a modification to the Newton Middle School Hockey Program. In the past, the program was open to both (i) hockey players who are enrolled in one of the four Newton public middle schools (Day, Bigelow, Oak Hill or Brown) and (ii) hockey players who participate on a Newton Youth Hockey team but do not attend one of the four Newton public middle schools. Players who attended a school other than one of the four Newton public middle schools and did not participate on a Newton Youth Hockey team were ineligible to participate in this program.
Based on feedback from parents and the continuous challenges we have in securing ice time, the Board has modified the policy as follows:
All Newton residents who are enrolled in either 6th, 7th or 8th grade in any school (whether or not one of the four Newton middle schools) may try out for the Middle School Hockey Program, but subject to the eligibility rules discussed below
There is no try out fee
Preference is given to players from the four Newton public middle schools and all such players will be provided a roster spot before players from schools other than a Newton public middle school will become eligible to participate.
This will be a "game only" program, meaning that there will be no guaranteed practices. As such, tuition will be $340 for current NYH players, or $390 for other participants.
We expect to have (at a minimum) 1 team for combined 7th and 8th grade boys and 1 team for 6th grade boys. There will be one team for 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls.
Each team can have up to 20 players (18 skaters and 2 goalies) on the bench at one time. If more than 30 players try out for a particular team, the program may expand to 2 teams at that particular level, depending on ice and coaching availability
Registration for the Middle School teams tryouts is now open.
