Hockey Is For Everyone: NYH & Big Brothers Big Sisters

We're so excited to announce another fantastic NYH event to celebrate Hockey Is For Everyone! We are teaming with Big Brothers Big Sisters on February 8th, 5pm-6pm at Daly Rink for a free open skate and basic introduction to hockey.

We will be hosting Big Brothers Big Sisters and the volunteers and BBBS folks at no cost. We will divide the rink in half so that one half is dedicated to an open skate. The other half of the rink, we will help the BBBS learn a little about hockey. Kids and adults with disabilities can be accommodated, if needed.

We need multiple volunteers (inside NYH or your friends and family) to support instruction and one-on-one attention. Please spread the word. Hope to see you there!

Many thanks,

Lisa Casillo

Hockey Is For Everyone: NYH teams up with BU Women's Hockey

In support of the NHL's February celebration Hockey Is For Everyone, we are teaming up with Boston University's Women's Hockey Team to promote diversity in all aspects of hockey - coaching, team leadership, and players!

On Saturday, February 22nd, Newton Youth Hockey will have the opportunity to see the BU Women's Hockey Team take on UConn at 3pm. Prior to the game, all NYH players will get a tour of the locker room, hear the pregame speech with the team's head coach, and (my personal favorite) hang out on the bench while the girls warm up for the game!

Tickets are $3 per person. Please send checks well in-advance and payable to: "Newton Youth Hockey". We cannot accomodate IOUs or issue refunds. Tickets are to be picked up at Will Call the day of the game, not in advance. You MUST include your name on the check and bring that ID to Will Call.

Send checks to:

Newton Youth Hockey

P.O. Box 153

Auburndale, MA 02466

More details, including time and pregame location, will be sent to you as soon as we get that information. In the meantime, save the date - Feb 22 @ 3pm - and get ready to celebrate Hockey Is For Everyone with us!

Thank you,

Lisa Casillo | Girls Program Director | NYH

Inventory Clearance - hockey socks!

Just in time for the final push to the playoffs, we're releasing the remainder of the NYH game socks from inventory.

Orders can be placed on the NYH website (select the Store menu near the top right) and socks will be delivered to your team's practice the week of January 20th. Supplies are limited, so if you want a fresh pair to get you through the rest of the season, get your orders in now.

Players Evaluation

NYH Travel Members,

In the coming weeks coaches will be receiving from me a coach’s evaluation form and will be rating each player on their team.

In further effort to increase transparency with the player roster placements, we’re sharing the evaluation criteria that the coaches use to score the players. The intent is that one head coach and at least one assistant coach completes the form for each player.

Each item is scored 1 thru 10 with 10 being the best. A score of 10 shows mastery of all criteria. A score of 5 would indicate ability to execute all skills adequately. A score of 1 would indicate insufficient skill for the level.

Goalies have different Items and are scored the same way.

You are welcome to share this information with your player as the coach’s evaluation process will begin soon.

As a reminder, the intent is that the 2+ coaches ratings carry about 60% of the scoring weight, and the tryout evaluators’ (four or more evaluators over three tryout sessions) scores worth about 40%. Since the coaches are with the players 4-5 months prior to their evaluations, their score carries a bit more weight.

It would be nice if this was a simple math exercise, but it isn’t. Some kids are new to NYH and don’t have a coach’s scoring history to count for 60%. Some kids miss tryouts for a variety of reasons. In these cases, we seek additional input where we can.

I hope this helps with your understanding of the process. Let me know if you have questions. Thanks, and Happy Holidays!
